mm+j attended the DoubleTALK event at Brickworks Building Products in Sydney last Thursday. DoubleTALK is curated by renowned Sydney based architect Stephen Varady and co-moderated with Bob Nation as series of talks engaging two speakers, showcasing some of the best Australian architects.
These are great events revealing the behind-the-scenes insights from initial client brief, site issues, design process, construction process and of course - through to the completed build.

This was a fun project + opportunity for mm+j to apply our favourite design principles in our own home. View our fairlight house project below.
client / our brief
Additions and alterations to a 1920s timber semi, including a new first floor, rear ground floor, decking and carparking. Retain the original facade and balcony and any changes to be complementary to its heritage
The original house facade facing the street was retained, and a new entrance created in the side elevation. This lengthways re-engineering of the entrance to the north-facing side of the home, enabled the creation of one large open-plan living space, without the need for a corridor.
Internally, the living spaces are bright, minimal and airy, thanks to the row of large windows bringing in as much light as possible and opening to the rear courtyard and raised decking area.
Clever use of space, including a feature staircase breaks up the design creating integrated storage and segments the space. The addition of a first floor add the extra 2 bedrooms, bathroom and home office.
“Small walls with integrated storage serves two functions, so it’s a really effective solution for a lot of people”
- David McCrae
The transition from lighter existing timber weatherboard to darker lightweight metal cladding assists in maintaining the original building character whilst reducing the building bulk using colour, and details. The roof is a linking element, reducing and masking the addition from the street.
