architecture of LA
Los Angeles equivalent to Bondi, mm+j architects explore Venice Beach.
East Hollywood residence originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. The buidling was completed in 1921 and is now the feature of Barnsdall Art Park.
Situated next door to Walt Disney's Concert Hall (see last week's blog), The Broad is a 120,000 square foot contemporary art museum designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler with a $140m budget.
Dubbed 'the veil and the vault' the veil wraps around the entire building, filtering light into the space, whilst the vault is the concrete body which forms the building's core. To learn more about The Broad visit www.thebroad.org/about/building
Frank Gehry's house in Santa Monica uses unconventional materials - chain link fencing, corrugated steel, plywood - wrapped around an existing Dutch colonial style home. A tilted glass extension was also added to the home in an unconventional manner.
Gehry beach house
Gehry's house at Venice Beach constructed in 1986 with everyday materials uses angular metal cladding with a touch of the surreal with a raised platform reminiscent of a lifesaving tower.
+ something for the film buffs
As seen in LA LA Land with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone (2016) the Angels Flight Railway is a landmark funicular railway in downtown LA. Two funicular cars run in opposite directions on a shared inclined 91m cable. The cable cars were closed for one day for filming of this scene.

One owner wanted the original character retained, the other a clean, contemporary feel. Additions and alterations to a California Bungalow house, including a new first floor, rear ground floor, pool and garage.
The original house facing the street was retained, with several features re-instated such as the porch, bay window and internal fixtures.
bright natural light living spaces
The new additions are contemporary design - with a raw quality created using plywood cladding and unpainted steelwork. Internally, the Living spaces are bright and airy, opening to the pool, garden and deck with an extendable awning for weather protection.
The transition from heavy rendered masonry to lightweight plywood cladding then skeletal exposed steel framing is reinforced using colour, details and fittings selections. The roof is the linking element, shielding the addition from the street.
